Tiny beats the fat!!

Jul 17, 2012

Pet Slimmer 2012 011‘Tiny’ the JRT has been crowned West Sussex's Best Pet Slimmer!

This year Pet Doctors has been running a Pet Slimmer Competition to find the pet that has shed the most pounds from January to June.  This is a regional competition for dogs and cats that have real weight problems.  To help them lose the flab, they have been put onto a special obesity prescription diet, Hills r/d.

Being overweight is as much a problem for dogs and cats as it is for us and sadly we are seeing more and more overweight pets in practice.  As we know from our own experiences losing weight can be difficult, it takes the right diet, the right exercise and a lot of dedication.  That’s where Beckie Hannah comes in!  Beckie is our dedicated weight management nurse and helps pets start on their diets and exercise regimes.  Each month she sees her slimmers for weight checks and motivational talks!

One of Beckies patients this year was ‘Tiny’ – by name not waist line!  Tiny is a short legged JRT whose ideal weight is 8.5kg, at her heaviest Tiny weighed in at 9.65kg.  Now a kilo may not sound like a lot to be overweight, but for her size one kilo overweight works out at 13% extra body mass, that’s the equivalent of an average human putting on 10kg!  It was decided that a strict diet needed to be enforced.  Tinys owner Mr Hatton and Beckie have worked really hard and both done well to ignore the appealing brown eyes looking for treats!

Everyones dedication resulted in Tiny winning Best Slimmer in the whole of West Sussex and Overall Runner -up for the South Coast!  Tiny has won a six month supply of slimming food, a £30 voucher to spend in the clinic, a £25 Marks and Spencers hamper for Mr Hatton and a certificate to put in pride of place at home.

Beckie says “It takes a lot of hard work for a pet to have consistent weight loss but the results are worth it.  It’s really important to come in for regular weight checks.  Mr Hatton really got into the challenge and the results are there for everyone to see.  Im so proud of Tiny who has now hit her target weight and is 100% more lively.”

If you are at all concerned about your pets weight please feel free to come in and have a chat to Beckie.  Who knows, next year it may be your pet that is the star slimmer!
