Taking your pet abroad just got easier!
Jan 19, 2012
The New Year has brought some changes to the PETS passport scheme meaning that getting a passport for your pet will now be cheaper and easier. A blood test is no longer required and you no longer have to wait 6 months before your pet is allowed into the UK.
The new rules which came into play as of the 1st of January 2012 require:
- a microchip,
- rabies vaccination,
- pet passport completion from an LVI (a vet who is specially registered to complete passports, which both of our vets are)
- and then just a 21 day wait after the vaccination before entering the UK.
So your pet could have their passport and be ready to join you on your summer holidays in less than a month!
The new regulations also no longer require tick treatment before entering the UK, although discussion about tapeworm treatment is ongoing. However, it is worth mentioning that the awful UK weather does prevent some nasty tick borne diseases which our pets have no immunity to. So although the tick treatment is no longer a requirement it would definitely be advisable to treat against ticks before leaving the UK to protect your pet. Our vets and nurses can advise you on the best anti-parasitic plan for your pet, taking into consideration where you are travelling to.
