Sharp shock for Pixie!
Nov 27, 2009
You may have seen an article in the Surrey Times recently about ‘Pixie’ who is a patient at Pet Doctors, Guildford.
Pixie’s owner was sewing up a jumper one night and left the needle and thread out. Unfortunately Pixie decided that the needle and thread was too interesting to ignore and decided to swallow it! Pixie was rushed into the clinic where an x-ray confirmed the presence of the inch long needle in her small intestine. In a two hour long operation the needle was successfully removed by vet Charlotte Dawson and Pixie was monitored very closely afterwards. Fortunately the prompt attention to the problem meant that there had been no internal damage from the needle. If Pixie had not been operated on as quickly, the needle may have perforated the intestines and spread infection.
The operation itself, however, involved opening Pixie’s intestines to remove the needle. This risks infection of the abdomen (peritonitis) which can be life-threatening.
You will be pleased to know that Pixie has recovered well from her operation and should have no lasting effects!
