There has been much in the press lately on how overweight our pets are becoming, usually due to too much love from owners who are unaware that obesity in pets can lead to serious health problems.
Bess is a lovely eight year old black labrador who has always been on a diet!
“Back in 2001, Bess was very overweight, weighing just over 40kg. After trying several dietary foods on and off her weight varied from 37kg to 39kg. This weight battle continued until December 2005 when I joined the practice,” explained Claire.

Bess’ adoring owners Clive and Jan Edwards treated her to a daily helping of toast, a Bonio every evening and a selection of dental chews along with her generous servings of dog food. Bess could not be bothered to walk far, let alone run anywhere.
“As Bess grew older she became arthritic. Claire explained that Bess needed to be put on a strict diet for the sake of her health, should have regular exercise and come back to be weighed monthly,” said Jan.
Following a carefully planned daily feeding regime, within the first month Bess lost 1kg! After careful monitoring and her owners’ dedication, Bess reached her target weight of 35kg in August 2006 and entered the Hill’s Pet Nutrition Pet Slimmer Competition.
“We can’t believe how much more energy Bess has – we’ve really noticed a difference,” said Jan.
Bess’ weight is now checked every two months to ensure she keeps in her trim condition. She currently weighs 34.5kg.
As runner up, Bess was delighted with her prize of a free bag of food and a new toy which she now has the energy to play with!
