ImageHomeopathy and Pets

Homeopathy, as we know it, has been in use since the 19th century when it was developed by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a physician in Germany.  From the very early stages the medicines (remedies) were used in animals with great success.  James Moore, a Scottish veterinary surgeon, wrote several books about homeopathy during the 1800's.

Homeopathy differs from conventional medicine primarily because it sees the patient as a whole being and treats every patient as an individual.  So, for example, in conventional medicine a dog suffering from epilepsy will most likely be given a specific anti-convulsant drug to control his seizures.  In homeopathy we would treat every case of epilepsy with a different remedy because every patient is different.

The Remedies

Homeopathic remedies are made from various materials ranging from salt (Natrum muriaticum) to snakes (Lachesis).  The remedies are broken down and energised so that none of the original substance (as we know it) remains in the remedy but the remaining energy is sufficient to prod the body into healing itself.  The remedies are safe and gentle and not associated with the side effects we often see with conventional drugs.

Homeopathy has been successfully used to treat many diseases.  Seizures, skin irritations, allergies, hormonal conditions and wounds are but a few conditions that respond well.  Also, homeopathy can treat behavioural and emotional problems such as inappropriate toileting, fear, travel sickness and grief in pets.

Nowadays, many people use natural and gentle medicines for themselves in preference to stronger ones that may have undesirable side effects.  Why not do the same for our pets?  Your can find out more about homeopathy on the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons website - www.bahvs.com.

Nazarene Moosa BVSc, VetMFHom, MRCVS, holds homeopathy clinics at the Pet Doctors Knaphill clinic.  For more details, contact the Knaphill reception on 01483 488008.
