Kerri's wound at start of treatment To say that Kerri the Boxer would travel to the ends of the earth for a good vet is perhaps a slight exaggeration but she is willing to travel 400 miles!
Along with her owners, Penny Ward and Colin Balkham, Kerri regularly makes a 400 mile round trip from her home on Exmoor to her favourite vet, Karen Scott at Pet Doctors Veterinary Clinic in Seaford, East Sussex!
Back in the Spring of 2007, Kerri developed a nasty and rather large lump on her foot. She was examined by her veterinary surgeon, at the time, and it was agreed that the lump should be removed by surgery. The operation was carried out but the lump regrew and a few months later they were faced with repeating the surgery again.
Kerri was anaesthetised again but unfortunately, due to her age, she struggled to breathe properly and the decision was taken to wake her up without the procedure being done.
Kerri's wound now, after treatment Whilst visiting their daughter, Fiona, a veterinary nurse at Pet Doctors, Seaford, Fiona suggested that they bring Kerri into Pet Doctors, to meet veterinary surgeon Karen Scott and get her to have a look at the lump and give a second opinion.
It was agreed to try to repeat the surgery and to give Kerri a skin graft in the hope that this would take and heal the large wound on her leg.
This time the surgery was a success and Kerri coped well with the anaesthetic thanks to the additional tests and monitoring which Karen uses with elderly patients. Unfortunately, the skin graft did not take and Karen advised that the best treatment would be to allow the wound to heal naturally and for Kerri to have a very basic form of hydrotherapy for 10 minutes twice a day – a cold shower!
Kerri, checking out a present Kerri’s owners were very dedicated and did everything they were advised to do and Kerri responded well to the treatment and in particular, to the extra fuss and attention she received every day! Despite the fact that Kerri has always hated showers, she was eventually queuing up at the shower room door - maybe it was something to do with the shredded roast chicken used to bribe her during the process!
Kerri The good news is that several months later, the wound finally healed and Kerri was soon back to her old self again!
