Happy Ending for Abandoned Puppy

May 7, 2010

Roxy, Polly & IsobelAn injured, starving puppy found abandoned and dodging traffic on a country road has been given a happy home thanks to a quirk of fate which brought her face to face with her very own Good Samaritan.

Mrs Angela Chadwick, who lives in Bramley, saw several cars drive past a puppy limping on Trunley Heath Road so pulled in to help.  She took it to local vet, Pet Doctors in Shalford, for treatment and has now offered it a home with her own two dogs Polly and Roxy.  She’s named her Isobel.

Angela drives along Trunley Heath Road regularly but, on 19 March, took the route earlier than usual which brought her there at the same time as the puppy.  According to Angela, she was a forlorn figure – her left leg was badly damaged.  She was tiny, emaciated and very smelly.

The team at Pet Doctors cared for the puppy while they tried to trace an owner but they also explained to Angela that, if no owner came forward, she would unfortunately have to be sent to the local dog pound.   It was possible she would have to be euthanased there as prospective owners are often reluctant to take on an injured dog.

“We were devastated at this prospect because Isobel was so delightful and loving despite the ordeal she’d been through,” said Angela.  “We couldn’t bear the thought of her facing such an uncertain future so we offered to give her a home.  Watching her return to health and strength has been a joy.  Even her injured leg is recovering well.   She’s bouncy and happy but it’s noticeable that she doesn’t want to leave my side.  Perhaps she thinks I might leave her too.

I’d like to thank the team at Pet Doctors for being so helpful in caring for her.  They have really done more than anyone could have wished for, both when I first found her and since.  They fell in love with her too and are as relieved as me that her story has ended happily.  She’s a very lucky puppy and I’m so glad I was a few minutes early on that fateful day.”
Veterinary nurse Leanne Murphy from Pet Doctors in Shalford, added:  “We’re thrilled that Isobel has found a loving home but, with rescue charities struggling to cope with so many abandoned animals, many others are less fortunate.

We appeal to pet owners to ensure their pets are neutered to help reduce the number of unwanted animals.   If they really can’t keep an animal, we ask them please to contact a rescue charity or a veterinary practice.  Help is available to them and abandoning animals in this way is cruel and unnecessary.”
