Owner Sought for Fleecy Glove Found Inside Casper!
Jun 11, 2010
The Kaye family from Guildford, owners of an eight year old Labrador called Casper, are wondering who might have owned a large fleecy glove removed from the intestine of their pet during an emergency operation. A dog already known for his ‘adventurous eating’, tucking into the glove nearly cost Casper his life. He has only just recovered from the surgery and is being fed a special diet as his intestines have suffered permanent damage.
According to Mrs Carolyn Kaye, Casper has a particular penchant for socks, which usually pass through his system without causing him problems. On 28 April, however, it became clear that he was unwell. “Casper was very depressed and had started vomiting and drooling. He was definitely not himself,” she explained. “We took him to see vet Helen Gething at the Pet Doctors branch in Guildford. She detected a large sausage shaped object in his abdomen and opted to operate immediately.
“Casper’s insides were not in good shape,” explained Helen. “I found a large dead area of dead intestine which I had to remove – and the large fleecy glove which had caused an obstruction, causing the intestines to do. The procedure was quite major in the end and I was concerned whether some of the remaining intestines would be able to survive.
After the operation we transferred Casper to the Woking branch of Pet Doctors. He was monitored very carefully but was touch and go for a few days. It was an anxious time all round. Fortunately, he did pull through and is recovering slowly – though having to be very careful about what he eats.”
Carolyn added: “We’re just so relieved to have Casper back home again and very grateful to Helen and her team. We just don’t know why he is so attracted to eating clothing – we have to be so careful about leaving clothes lying around at home!
As for the glove, well, it’s certainly not one of ours so I can only assume that someone must have lost it while out on a walk. We’ve washed it a couple of times so its owner is welcome to reclaim it!”
