Local Vet Runs Great South Run to help Children with Cancer
David Hodges, senior vet at Pet Doctors in Rustington, is hoping to raise £350 to help children with cancer by running the BUPA Great South Run on Saturday 25 October 2009. David, whose son Harry was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2007, is running the 10 mile race in aid of CLIC SARGENT, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, which provides support and advice to the families of children suffering from cancer and also funds research into childhood cancers.
The Great South Run, one of the leading 10 mile races in Europe, follows a flat, fast course between Southsea and Portsmouth. Over 21,000 runners are expecting to compete in this year’s event.
Commenting on his participation, David Hodges said: “The strain that having a child suffering with cancer puts on a family is difficult for people to understand unless they’ve been in that situation. As if the constant worry because your child is very sick is not enough, there’s also the difficulty of managing work and extra care for other children around hospital visits and treatment. The financial stress and sheer exhaustion can make their burden even harder to bear.
“CLIC Sargent has been with us every step of the way through Harry’s illness. The support and help they have given us has made a real difference and I want to help ensure they can provide the same lifeline to other affected families.
“I’ve been training hard for the run and am really looking forward to the big day. I hope as many people as possible will support me so I can reach and even beat my target.”
