Vets’ Open Day Raises Hospice Funds
An Open Day at the Pet Doctors Animal hospital in Newport has raised over £100 for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, the hospital’s chosen charity for 2010.  On Sunday 27 June, one of the hottest days of the year, guests were treated to a rare glimpse ‘behind the scenes’ at the hospital; a variety of informative displays, competitions and demonstrations by Canine Partners of the practical tasks the assistance dogs are trained to carry out when they are partnered with someone in a wheelchair.
Other attractions included talks and demonstrations on various aspects of veterinary care, face-painting and a dedicated rabbit and small furry room
Cassie, a six year old black German Shepherd, owned by Jillie Wheeler from Bembridge and a Pet Doctors patient, also made a special appearance to help draw the winning tickets for the raffle.  Cassie is a popular figure at events in aid of the Mountbatten Hospice as Jillie is also a regular fundraiser.  The Hospice cares for around 800 patients facing life-threatening conditions every year.
Commenting on the Open Day, Pet Doctors Area Manager Neil Baker said:  “We had a great day despite the disappointment on the football pitch in South Africa.  We thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many people, taking part in the advice clinics and talks and chatting to guests informally about their pets.  We’re also delighted to have helped raise funds for the Mountbatten Hospice which carries out such vital work on the Island.”
Pet Doctors is based at Newport and has branches at Ryde and Cowes.  The Newport branch can be contacted on 01983 522804.
