Cats and car oil

C fakepath cat8

Q. My young cat has a habit of sleeping under parked cars and often ends up with oil on her fur.  Could this harm her?

Most petrol and oil-based products are not enormously toxic but significant ingestion or inhalation can lead to problems.

Cats are very clean creatures by nature and will lick the affected area.  You could try cleaning the area with warm water and washing up liquid.

Cats are not too keen on baths however, and if you are concerned that your cat has large amounts of oil on her, it might be worth making an appointment at your vets where they can sedate her before washing off the oil.
