Budgies and Smoking

dreamstime 1935274Q. My Uncle and Aunt are staying for a few weeks this year and both smoke heavily.  Will the smoke be harmful to my two budgies?  They are used to a smoke free environment.

A. Smoke is a respiratory irritant and there is no doubt that birds kept in smoking environments are more prone to respiratory disease.

Best advice would be to put the birds in one room and exclude your relatives from it so that the birds avoid the smoke entirely.  Don't be tempted to open too many windows as the draughts and cold air will be no good for the birds either.
