Cat Walking in Circles

Q.    My elderly cat has started walking round in circles for no apparent reason.  She doesn’t seem to know what she is doing.   Is this just old age or should I take her to my vet?

A.    There are several diseases which could cause such behaviour ranging from a middle ear infection causing imbalance – which is treatable with antibiotics - to much more serious conditions such as a stroke, blindness, senility and brain tumours. 

Certainly it is worth your vet carrying out a thorough examination of your cat to try to identify the cause of the problem if it is not obvious. 

There is medication available which can help to reduce damage following a stroke and reduce the effects of senility, so in most cases your vet could help.
