Flea Treatment and Cats

Q.  I've been told that some of the flea treatments in supermarkets are unsuitable for my cat?  Is this true?

One of the most common causes of accidental poisoning of pets is through the incorrect use of flea treatments in cats.  Many pet owners are not aware that there is a difference between dog and cat flea treatments. 

Flea treatments for dogs include a substance called "permethrin" which is poisonous to cats.  If flea treatment for dogs is accidentally applied to a cat, the cat can become very ill as it will quickly ingest the potentially fatal substance through grooming its fur.  Some cats can suffer fits which is very stressful.

It is always advisable to consult your vet for the most suitable flea treatment for your pet.
