Straining and Off Food

Q.    My five year old male cat uses a litter tray indoors.  Over the last couple of days, I have noticed that he seems to be straining and experiencing difficulties when urinating.  He is also restless and off his food.  What can I do to help him feel better?

A.    Your cat is possibly suffering from Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease which causes inflammation of the lower urinary tract.  Consult your vet immediately. 

This condition can lead to a blockage causing an obstruction to the passage of urine.  This can be extremely dangerous and is common in male cats.  Unless treated quickly, complete obstruction can cause irreversible damage to the kidneys. 

Your vet will carry out various tests on your cat to identify the exact cause of the problem in order to prescribe the correct treatment and will advise you on a suitable diet, for your cat, to help prevent a recurrence of the disease. 

Other common causes of obstruction include calculi (stones), strictures and swelling.  Inflammation (eg cystitis) also needs to be treated by a vet.
