A New Baby and Your Pets - Living Together Healthily

A few essential tips for expectant Mums

Pregnant LadyDiseases transferred from our pets to unborn babies are rare.  However, if you are expecting, it is important to take extra care.  You can continue to live in harmony with your pets if you follow these simple guidelinesDuring pregnancy:

  • Always wash your hands after any contact with any animals
  • Don’t change your cat’s litter tray
  • Avoid any contact with your pet’s faeces
  • Prepare your pets for any necessary changes as soon as possible to limit the stress of the baby’s arrival
  • Start teaching your pets that the baby’s room is “out of bounds”

Once Baby Arrives:

  • Don’t let your pets into the room where your baby sleeps, especially if unattended.
  • Don’t allow your pet to lick your baby’s face
  • Put a cat net over the pram or pushchair
  • Make sure you also set aside some quality time for your pets so they do not feel left out
  • Try to continue your regular walks with your dog at set times and cats will benefit from their own special “quiet space”

Always

  • Keep and clean pets’ food and water bowls separate from your own
  • Ensure your pet is fully vaccinated, wormed and flea treated and has regular healthchecks at your vets
