Food Allergies

Dog and catQ.    Can cats and dogs suffer from food allergies? How would I know if my dog had an allergy?

A.     They can indeed suffer from food allergies. These only make up a small percentage of skin problems – most animals affected will be itchy, and may also have gastrointestinal signs.

Before a diagnosis of food allergy is considered more common conditions must be ruled out. Strict flea control, which your veterinary practice can advise you on, is initially called for, and they will also need to rule out other parasites.

If food allergy is suspected, then a 6-week dietary trial is recommended. This can be with a home-made or a commercial prescription diet.

If signs improve, then you can challenge the dog with the old diet – a return of itchiness would indicate that the diet is responsible.
